Founded in 1736, Augusta's roots run deep into the red clay along the Savannah River. Yet most have little idea that early on Augusta was home to an African American community of free blacks and slaves right in the heart of the city. The community contains the oldest African American church in the country that would in time form the birthplace for Morehouse College. That community was Springfield.
