Augusta Wholesale Furniture Fire

Frank Christian

April 8, 1949

A devastating fire swept through the the second and third floors of the Augusta Wholesale Furniture Company, located at 815 Ellis Street, a little after two in the afternoon. A wind from the south fanned the flames and all of Augusta's fire fighting equipment was called for. Smoke was carried over to Broad Street, halting traffic and driving customers from stores. Hundreds of people came to see the flames that the owner estimated resulted in around forty-thousand dollars in damages.
