Brown Bag History Series
The US Army in Augusta since 1877
Mr. Steven Rauch

The Augusta useum of History will present its next monthly Brown Bag History Series on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 12:00 p.m.  The speaker will be Mr. Steven Rauch and his topic will be The US Army in Augusta since 1877.

Have you ever wondered why there is a weather map in the daily newspaper?  It began as a US Army meteorological service effort in the late 19th century to inform US agriculture activities of conditions favorable to planting.  More importantly, Augusta played a role as one of the reporting centers by having a Signal weather service station in downtown Augusta.  Mr. Rauch’s discussion will include information about the weather station, the Augusta Arsenal, the Signal Corps flying school on San Bar Ferry Road, Camp Hancock where the present Daniel Field is located and of course Fort Gordon.  The presentation will include a wide selection of photos of many of these sites where Augusta played a key role in US military history.

Steven J. Rauch is the Command Historian at the US Army Signal Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia and an adjunct instructor at Augusta State University where he teaches courses on American Military History and the United States to 1877. He is a retired Army officer who has written and taught military history at the US Army Command and General Staff College, the University of Michigan, and the US Army Ordnance School.
