The Augusta Museum of History will present its next monthly Brown Bag History Series on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. The speaker will be Mr. Corey Rogers and his topic will be Financial and Educational Prosperity in Augusta’s Golden Blocks.
The “Golden Blocks” was an area of the Augusta black community that was extremely prosperous during the first half of the 20th Century. The intersection of Gwinnett and Ninth Streets marked the center of black business and social activities. Located within a small radius of this hub were Lenox Theater, Penny Savings and Loan Investment Company, Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company, Haines Normal and Industrial Institute, Tabernacle Baptist Church, professional offices and several undertaking establishments.
A native of Augusta, Corey Rogers serves as Historian at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History. His talk will focus on the many people, places and events synonymous with Augusta’s “Golden Blocks”.
