Special Programs

Holdiay Gingerbread Village

For the 7th year, the Augusta Museum of History is proud to present an experience to delight the senses...the annual Holiday Gingerbread Village!!

Thursday, November 15 through Sunday, November 25 in the Museum's Rotunda

Each historic-themed gingerbread creation will be available through silent auction, with proceeds benefiting Museum programs and exhibitions. The display and the opportunity to bid on the structures are FREE to the public during regular Museum hours.

The week of Monday, November 19 through Sunday, November 25, the Museum will be open to the public with an exception of Thanksgiving Day, which will be closed.

Hours: November, 15 - November 25, 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday, November 18 and 25, 1pm - 5pm

ALL ABOARD!!! THE POLAR EXPRESS

Date - Sunday December 9th & 16th

Get up, get on, and get ready for the ride of your life. The story of the Polar Express will be performed to the delight of the young passengers. At the end: All will Believe!!

Two Performances per date: 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. on the passenger car in the Museum's Transportaion exhibit area.

Cost is $5 (children must be in their pajamas and must have thier "Golden Ticket" to board the train) No adults will board the train.

Space is limited to 36 children per performance.

Golden Tickets will be on Sale October 1, 2012!!! Limit (2) tickets per adult - tickets can be purchased Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(All accompanying adults will be charged regular admission - if a member of the Museum, the adult will not be charged.)

After each performance, children and their parents will be treated with hot chocolate and cookies in the Museum's Rotunda courtesy of Tastefully Yours, LLC. (with an apprearance from a special Christmas guest!!!)

Voices of the Past - Museum Theater

The Other Tubmans - The character in The Other Tubmans, tells a story that explains the connection between local Tubman slaves freed in the 1830s and William Tubman, who served as Liberia, Africa's longest running President from 1944-1971.

  • February 4, March 3, and April 14, 2012
    Performances at 12 noon, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm. Free with Museum admission.

A Petersburg Boat Pilot - Based on oral histories provided by Elberton, Georgia resident, Mr. "Buck" Balchin, abou this grandfather, James Henry Balchin, who crewed and piloted cotton boats from Petersburg to Augusta from the mid-ninteenth century until 1900.

    Performances at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. Free with Museum admission.

Annual Jimmie Dyess Symposium

The symposium was created and developed to recognize Marine Lieutenant Colonel Jimmie Dyess's courage as both a citizen and a soldier of the United States and to identify others who have shown similar valor or made civic contributions above and beyond the call of duty 

The symposium includes talks by several distinguished individuals, including the yearly recipient of the Jimmie Dyess Distinguished American Award. 

The Symposium is held every January.

White Glove Dinners

A small group is treated to a special interactive behind-the-scenes experience in the Museum's collections. Guests don white gloves and examine artifacts, manuscripts, map, and photographs that document a specific time in the regions' history. The first half of the evening is spent in the Knox Center Research Center, studying materials and learning aspects of preservation methods and procedures. This is followed by discussion and dinner in the Rotunda. This event is invitation only.
